TRIO REVIEW IN HERALD

Guitarist Kevin Mackenzie's latest trio, with bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Adam Sorensen, shows similar signs of high-level internal communication.

Mackenzie's parallel career in traditional music often shines through in his melodies - the smart, mobile Fall of Stout was inspired by a certain well-known fiddler's, er, hiccup - although the group's tightness and easy ebb and flow suggest jazzer John Scofield's 1970s trio updated.

As with Scofield, too, there's bite as well as understated elegance in Mackenzie's soloing and, in Caribe and Sorensen, he has partners who contribute strong individual sounds as well as notes and, in the latter, a drummer conversant with both graceful colouring and Hip-Hoperation's dancing street funk.
